Maximalist Home Tours

Being a minimalist is all the rage right now. Marie Kondo’s series “Tidying Up” and the documentary “Minimalism” are big hits on Netflix, minimalist YouTubers like Jenny Mustard’s channels are booming, and everywhere influencers and content creators are sharing their capsule wardrobes.
The truth is, I get it. Keeping neat keeps you stay sane, owning fewer quality pieces over a hundred throw-away ones is a pretty solid ethos, and we should all be making an effort to consume less and instead focus on spending quality time on our human connections. Even so, I can unfortunately say that a minimalist is just… not who I am.I love things. Stuff. Objects d’art.
Maybe it’s because I’m a Gemini, or maybe because I am an artist in all things, but everything from my home decor to my wardrobe is another tool for exploring who I am. My life has been a constant, evolving, and layered quest for identity that is best served by the curation of the things I surround myself with. Not only that, my air sign dominant makes me mercurial and changeable, and I love that I have the option to completely reinvent my aesthetic at a moment’s notice.
When we first moved into our tiny almost-studio apartment, I made a concerted effort to bring in fewer of my possessions, in the hopes of making our space seem larger. However, it didn’t take long until the collage of torn-out magazine pages and postcards hung above our bed in our (medieval-themed) bedroom crept out into the bathroom, the hall, the living room, and the refrigerator. I love to patchwork my walls with images that inspire me, remind me of the person I’d like to be, and most importantly, make visitors stop and peruse as if they’re in a museum.
Here are some of my favorite YouTube videos featuring homes that aren’t minimalist. I hope they’ll inspire and delight you as much as they do me!
